TOW BARS
Thinking about getting a towbar but not sure which type to go for? Don’t worry it’s easier than it sounds once you know the basics. There are two main styles to choose from: flange towbars and swan neck towbars. Flange towbars are often more affordable and great for heavy-duty or commercial towing. Swan neck towbars, on the other hand, have a more streamlined look and take up less space.
You might also want to choose between a fixed towbar, which stays on your vehicle all the time, or a detachable one that you can remove when you’re not using it. Take a look at the different options below to find the best fit for your car and your needs. Just keep in mind that not every towbar type works with every vehicle so it’s worth double-checking what’s compatible with yours.
FIXED SWAN NECK
- Sleeker design – more discreet and modern-looking
- Compatible with AL-KO stabilisers – ideal for caravans
- Less likely to trigger parking sensors
- Slightly more expensive than a flange towbar
- Not compatible with bumper shields
- Can’t tow and carry bikes at the same time
FIXED FLANGE
- Permanently attached to your vehicle for a sturdy fit
- Ideal for serious towing and heavy loads
- Can tow and carry bikes at the same time
- Compatible with AL-KO towballs
- Supports towing couplings and accessories
DETACHABLE SWAN
- Same sleek look as a fixed swan neck towbar
- Compatible with AL-KO stabilisers – great for caravans
- Less likely to trigger parking sensors when removed
- Can’t be used with a bumper shield
- Not suitable for towing and carrying bikes at the same time
